There are several ways that the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina, each leading to different vision issues including nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. When a patient suffers from these eye conditions corrective measures include contacts and eyeglasses or even better – LASIK eye surgery!

Nearsightedness (Myopia) – close objects can be seen clearly, but distant objects appear blurry.
Farsightedness (Hyperopia) – distant objects may seem clear, but close things are blurry.
Astigmatism – both near and distant objects can appear blurry or distorted due to an unusually shaped cornea.
Presbyopia is a focusing problem that occurs in most adults at around age 40. The eyes gradually lose their ability to see things up close due to the lens becoming less flexible.

Myopia is a common refractive error, also known as nearsightedness. This means patients see best when things are close up, but have trouble seeing things that are farther away. Myopia occurs when light entering the eye comes into focus in front of the retina instead of precisely on the retina.

Myopia Causes

A cornea that is too steeply curved
An Eye that is longer than normal
or by a combination of both problems.

Treatment for Myopia:

Glasses and contact lenses provide temporary myopia correction. LASIK can provide long-term correction.

Hyperopia is a common refractive error, also known as farsightedness. This means patients can see best when things are very far away, but have trouble seeing things that are closer. Hyperopia occurs when light entering the eye comes into focus behind the retina instead of precisely on the retina.

Hyperopia Causes:

A cornea that is too flat
And Eye that is shorter than normal
or by a combination of both problems.

Treatment for Hyperopia

Glasses and contact lenses provide temporary hyperopia correction. LASIK can provide long-term correction.

Astigmatism is a common refractive error. Patients with astigmatism experience blurred or distorted vision at all distances. Astigmatism occurs when light entering the eye comes into focus at multiple points, either in front of or behind the retina, instead of precisely on the retina.

Astigmatism Causes

A cornea that is irregularly shaped, and differs from the rounded shape of a normal cornea.
An asymmetrical egg shaped lens inside the eye.

Treatment for Astigmatism

Treatment for astigmatism depends on the severity of the condition. Glasses and contact lenses provide temporary correction but LASIK or PRK can offer a more long-term solution.

Presbyopia is a common refractive error as you age. When we are young, the eye’s lens is extremely flexible, and allows us to easily focus on close objects. Over time, the lens gradually loses its flexibility, which makes it difficult to focus on close objects. The condition usually begins at the age for 40 and is generally the time individuals need reading glasses. Those who find reading glasses inconvenient end up in our offices asking about LASIK!
