LASIK FAQs

View Video

Over 14 million Americans have had LASIK over the years, and most report it to be an extremely safe procedure. As with any type of surgery, there are potential risks, including dry eyes and vision complications. In rare cases, there can be vision loss. However, some ophthalmologists believe that the long-term risk of wearing contact lenses is actually higher than the risk of LASIK.

We cannot promise that you won’t need reading glasses in the future after LASIK, but most of our patients are able to live life without glasses or contacts after surgery. As you age, the natural lens of your eye may become less flexible, making it difficult to see things close-up. This is called presbyopia and can occur whether or not you have LASIK.

Absolutely not! LASIK technology has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, but there are still centers that use outdated technology to promote bargain-basement prices for LASIK. This older technology, while still FDA approved, does not provide results that are as accurate or safe as the new technology. Do your research to make sure you are getting the very best treatment for your eyes.

Thanks to advances in lasers and vision correction surgical procedures, there are several different alternatives for people when LASIK is not an option. Among these choices are PRK vision correction, Visian ICL, and ReLEx® SMILE laser eye surgeries.

At Inland Eye LASIK, we understand that cost is often a major road block for people considering elective medical procedures such as LASIK that are not covered by insurance. We work hard to make improving your vision as affordable as possible by offering 0% deferred interest financing options for up to 24 months through CareCredit®. We also offer longer term low-interest financing options. We’ll work hard to make your procedure fit into your budget.

Start by taking our free online LASIK self-evaluation to see if you might be a candidate or schedule your free LASIK consultation.

The goal of LASIK eye surgery is to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts for people who endure the hassles of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. This laser technology permanently reshapes the cornea so the light that passes through focuses correctly, resulting in clear vision. LASIK technology has steadily improved since the 1990s and now allows for vision correction for more people than ever.

Flexible Spending Accounts, Heath Savings Accounts, and Cafeteria Plans allow you to allocate a portion of your paychecks to be placed into a tax-free account to use for non-reimbursable medical expenses, such as LASIK. These plans can help you save a significant amount off your procedure. However, each plan has strict rules for how and when you can use these funds, so make sure you fully understand the details of your plan before you enroll.

Most of our patients are amazed about two things during their LASIK procedure – that it doesn’t hurt and that it is so quick. Because we numb your eyes with eye drops before the procedure, you’ll only experience a slight pressure during the first step of the process. There may be some itching and redness as your eyes heal, but that can be easily soothed with eye drops.

Another thing our LASIK patients are amazed about is how quickly they recover from LASIK. Most people can return to normal activities – possibly even work – within a couple of days. However, it’s not a bad idea to take a little time off. Most people are even be able to drive the day after their procedure. Eyesight will continue to improve as the eyes stabilize.

The only way to determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK is by scheduling a free LASIK Consultation with Dr. Blanton. Good candidates are those who:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Are not pregnant or nursing
  • Stable prescription for at least one year
  • Free from eye injuries and infection
  • Not suffering from dry eye syndrome
  • Have overall healthy eyes and appropriate corneal thickness
  • No issues with corneal disease or cataracts
  • Are tired of glasses and contacts

Our LASIK technology takes into effect that patients are nervous. You don’t need to worry about compromising your surgery by involuntary blinks or movements. Your eyelids are held open with a special mechanism, and the laser we use has technology that precisely tracks eye movements.

Probably not. LASIK technology is not likely to undergo major changes in the near future, and the cost of LASIK probably won’t go down. You may be able to take advantage of financing options to make LASIK more affordable right now. Best of all, you won’t waste years of your life with inferior vision.
