Refractive Surgery

What is LASIK?

The goal of LASIK eye surgery is to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts for people who endure the hassles of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. This laser technology permanently reshapes the cornea so the light that passes through focuses correctly, resulting in clear vision.

LASIK technology has steadily improved since the 1990s and now allows for vision correction for more people than ever.

Good LASIK candidates are those who:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Are not pregnant or nursing
  • Stable prescription for at least one year
  • Free from eye injuries and infection
  • Not suffering from dry eye syndrome
  • Have overall healthy eyes and appropriate corneal thickness
  • No issues with corneal disease or cataracts
  • Are tired of glasses and contacts
The LASIK Procedure

The LASIK Procedure

Dr. Blanton Performing LASIK Surgery

You will be awake throughout the LASIK procedure. The doctor gives you eye drops to numb your eyes so that you are comfortable.

Next, the doctor creates a protective hinged flap using bladeless IntraLase technology revealing the inner corneal tissue. This inner corneal tissue is reshaped with iDesign wavefront-guided Star S4 technology to mimic your contact lens or glasses prescription. Once the shape of the cornea is corrected, the surgeon gently replaces the flap and aligns it to its original position. It heals naturally.

After the procedure, you will leave with an eye shield and eye drops to help your eye heal. Generally, most patients return to work within 24-48 hours.

LASIK Expectations

We cannot promise that every LASIK patient will achieve 20/20 vision. However, 98% of our patients see with 20/20 or better vision after surgery. This percentage is so high because Dr. Blanton carefully screens every patient he treats. On average, he rejects 5-10% of LASIK applicants in favor of a different type of procedure.

LASIK Risks

LASIK is a safe, effective and permanent procedure. But it’s still a surgical procedure and carries some risks. Those risks may include:

You can greatly reduce these risks by choosing a surgeon like Dr. Blanton who performs a comprehensive LASIK evaluation and uses the most advanced LASIK technology.
